In today’s world, we are persuaded to believe that doing what others expect of us is the answer to a happy life. External expectations and norms shape us as individuals and influence our aspirations. Work the 9-5 till you’re 65, and then you can start living. Surely, society benefits from the long work-life of citizens, and individuals have bought into the idea that these jobs are necessary. It adds no advantage that the easiest way in life is to follow that paved path, and not to question what you truly want to accomplish.
I want to bring this perspective to light because of the irrevocable consequences of blindly following the herd. Our society has a role “in making the life of a civilized people an institution, in which the life of the individual is to a great extent absorbed, in order to preserve and perfect that of the race.” Individuality is lost in the crowd and we are urged to hide our differences or cower with them. There is a lot of suffering when you’re living in contrary to your values and truth. Every day is a battle, in which you are on both sides.
It is a worthwhile pursuit to stray from the crowd if the direction of society is not in alignment with yourself. We are so socially conditioned to believe and think one way, that when we hear about a new concept out of our comfort zone, we reject it. That is why, as I’ve personally experienced, when you seek support and encouragement from others, they may question your choices in turn. Your ideas are foreign to them so they try to steer you back in the “right direction”. Don’t let others’ fears in their own lives influence your thoughts. Decide for yourself what your fears are, instead of accepting what society is telling you. We are the artists of our lives and must never let those who have their eyes shut tell us how to paint. We must rid ourselves of these belief systems to “fit in” and “keep up”. Be okay paving your own path, let go of the control of your life, and just enjoy the present.
To do what you feel is right when the combined judgment of mankind seems against you, when all the world says no, that requires the ultimate in courageous self-confidence.
Henry David Thoreau
